Mercury Blood Pressure Cuffs

Q: Is it prohibited to purchase and/or use mercury containing blood pressure cuffs?

A: It is certainly a "best practice" to transition to non-mercury containing medical devices. Check out the EPA's Eliminating Mercury Environmental Best Practice Guide for details.

Whether it is actually illegal to buy and/or continue to use mercury-containing thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, etc. depends upon which state and locality your facility is located in. Use this resource to see the laws that apply for you.

For more information about mercury, refer to Tab 7 and 8 in your Quality America OSHA Safety Program Manual or Tab 5 and 6 in your Dental OSHA Safety Program Manual.
